Starting Thursday, you’ll be able to authenticate with your New York Times digital subscription and read it all inside Flipboard. There’s a revenue sharing deal in place, but no word on how much Flipboard gets. Depending on which of the silly New York Time subscription tiers is required, I might finally subscribe.
In the broader picture, I hope this is the start of a trend. The Adobe tools most companies use to turn their publications into iPad apps are dreadful. New York Times’ own home-grown app is decent, but very under-featured and is practically illiterate when it comes to supporting third-party services. With the New York Times making all its content available to Flipboard’s audience, paywall intact, all those problems are solved, and it scores a great UI for minimal effort. Win-win for everyone.
