Nieman Journalism Lab: The Verge is giving extra credit (and links) to primary sources

The debate has raged on this policy even way back when some of The Verge guys were at Engadget, and I was just starting out at TUAW, a sister publication (we were both Weblogs Inc. properties when Jason Calacanis sold it to AOL in 2005). I still vaguely remember the policy debates we had on the internal company email list, and even then I truly believed in crediting and linking in-line.

I’m delighted that they finally decided to start giving credit in the place the vast majority of readers will see—right in the article—as well as in the (an admittedly convenient, but mostly for research purposes) Sources section at the bottom.

Giving credit where appropriate is an essential aspect of blogging, and one of the core values that, sadly, “new media” can still hold over old media’s head, even in 2012.
