Apple had quite the day yesterday. It announced a whopping number of products to a WWDC audience that sold out in less than two hours—a record, I believe. The company even released a few more products off-stage, quietly in its store. But there were plenty of rumored releases that ultimately turned out to be hopeful third-party vaporware:
What Apple announced on stage:
- 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display - ships now
- 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro refresh – ships now
- 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Air refresh – ships now
- OS X Mountain Lion and new features, such as Power Nap and Facebook integration – ships in July
- iOS 6 with more Siri power and options, a rebuilt Maps system, Facebook integration, a new Passbook feature, and more – ships this fall
What Apple released off stage:
- Smart Case, a new full body case for iPad
- AirPort Express redesign
- Mac Pro bump, not even a refresh. It is largely seen as a sign that Apple doesn’t care about the Mac Pro anymore Update: On the topic of the Mac Pro, Tim Cook told a customer that “we’re working on something really great for later next year.”
- Some accessories like a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter and a MagSafe to MagSafe 2 converter (the new MacBooks use a redesigned MagSafe power connector)
What was rumored but turned out to be hot air:
- iPhone 5
- MacBook Airs with Retina displays
- new iMacs
- Apple TV reboot
- Apple television of any kind
